ESD-Resistant Light Screens

lightscreen.gif (29070 bytes)Banner's new ESD-resistant (electro-static discharge-resistant) MICRO-SCREEN Safety Light Screen systems were specifically designed to protect nearby components from ESD voltages.

According to the ESD Association, the estimated 8% to 33% of electronic products lost due to ESD damage during production and testing cost billions of dollars annually.  Designed to address this issue, the new light screens' emitters and receivers are constructed with an electroless nickel-plated housing, a static-dissipative lens window, dissipative cables and stainless steel mounting brackets.

Ultra-compact MICRO-SCREEN systems, offering a 6 m or 9 m, (20' or 30') range, are ideal for space-limited application s in most industries.

ESD-resistant MICRO-SCREEN systems feature an independently operating dual-microprocessor controller for maximum guarding reliability.  They include a standard Secondary Switching Device (SSD) relay and an emergency stop input, and are available with DeviceNet™ for centralized control monitoring and diagnostics.   Separate switches on the controller allow users to select different modes of operation

ESD-resistant MICRO-SCREEN systems are easily configured for one- or two-beam floating blanking and feature highly visible diagnostic and status indicators that simplify configuration and troubleshooting.

Color-coded wires and terminals and three cable options simplify installation.  Choose from a 7.6 m (25') integral cable for permanent installation, a 30 mm (12") "pigtail" quick-disconnect (QD) for hard-to-reach sensors, or an integral QD fitting.

EZ-SCREEN, SAFETY LIGHT SCREEN SYSTEM

Banner Engineering Corp. has introduced the EZ-SCREEN, Safety Light Screen System, a non-contact, point-of-operation machine guarding system.  This new robust system is believed to be the industry's easiest to set up, align and operate due to its excellent optical design, variety of sizes and resolutions, zone indicators, detailed diagnostics, and flexible mounting options.  It is also believed to be the lowest cost system of its kind with a list price beginning at only $1025 for an emitter and receiver pair.  The system also features plenty of power with a range up to 18 m (60') and exceptionally fast response times ranging from 9 to 40 ms.

"Especially significant to note, the two-piece EZ-SCREEN System does not require a separate control box, only a self-contained emitter and receiver pair, said Mike Carlson, Technical Manager for Banner's Safety Products.  "This technology also eliminates the need for a synchronization wire between the emitter and receiver because the system is synchronized optically - making it extraordinarily easy to install and operate," Carlson also stated.  Despite its simplicity, this redundant microprocessor-controlled, self-checking design exceeds control reliability requirements and is certified per CE (Type 4/Category 4) and cULus (NIPF, UL61496, UL 1998).

With systems available in two resolutions offering minimum object sensitivity of 14 mm (.55") or 30 mm (1.18"), this compact package is ideal for finger or hand detection on smaller production machines, yet robust enough for large power presses.  The addition of these hand protection EZ-SCREEN models round out the EZ-SCREEN safety light screen product family that includes grid and point style models for long-range (up to 70 m) perimeter guarding applications.  The vibration-tolerant emitter and receiver circuitry, rugged aluminum housing, die-cast metal end caps, and acrylic lens cover make the system extremely rugged for long-lasting dependability even in demanding industrial environments.  It is also smaller than similar competitive systems, measuring just 45.2 mm (1.78") by 36 mm (1.42").

Ease of setup is achieved with a wide range of protective heights from 150 to 1800 mm (6" to 71"), available in 150 mm (6") increments.  The emitter and receiver can be oriented on a vertical or horizontal plane or at any angle in between.  Bracket choices provide the option of mounting the emitter and receiver from each end or by a convenient mounting channel on either side.  Special brackets are also available for retrofitting older light curtains.  Each system is pre-configured for most typical Trip Output, "reach-through" applications.  Trip Output automatically resets when blocked beams are cleared.  For "pass-through" applications, Latch Output is easily configured via the access panel on the front of the receiver.  Latching Output requires a manual reset once the beams are cleared.

Exceptional diagnostics further aid and simplify setup, operation and maintenance.  Both emitter and receiver feature highly visible Diagnostic Displays to provide continuous feedback of operating status, configuration and error conditions.  The receiver features an easy to read seven-segment, three-digit display to indicate the number of beams interrupted or blocked and error codes if the system goes into lockout mode.  The LED Zone Indicators on the receiver show when sections of the light screen are aligned or clear, or which areas are misaligned or blocked.  Dip-switch selectable functions enable reduced resolution (Floating Blanking), Trip or Latch Output, External Device Monitoring (EDM), and Scan Code setting are accessible through the access cover.

The Banner EZ-SCREEN System is intended for point-of-operation machine guarding applications and other safeguarding applications, including area guarding when mounted horizontally and perimeter guarding utilizing corner mirrors.  A complete range of mounting brackets, stands and mirrors are available to facilitate virtually any conceivable mounting configuration.  Typical applications include small assembly equipment, pick-and-place machines, molding presses, packaging machinery, palletizers, roll formers, automated production equipment, robotic work cells, and power press applications.  The new EZ-SCREEN is an economical solution and one of the lowest cost point-of-operation, non-contact safety systems available on the market today!

The receiver has two solid-state safety outputs to control 24V dc loads up to 0.5 amps.  For ac loads or loads requiring higher currents, an optional relay interface module is available, or discrete relays may be driven directly.

GATE MONITORING SAFETY MODULE

Banner's GM-FA-10J Gate Monitoring Safety Module is a new monitoring device for use with both mechanical and magnetic safety switches for control-reliable gate and door guarding application.  The GM-FA-10J verifies proper operation of either one or two safety switches by monitoring a normally-open (N/O) and a normally-closed (N/C) contact set from each switch.

Repeated washdowns diminish the reliability of mechanically-switches gate guarding systems, but the GM-FA-10J, in combination with Banner's triple-coded magnetic safety switches, provides continuous reliable gate guarding for applications where repeated washdown is a factor such as food processing and bottling.

The GM-FA-10J features a self-checking, diverse-redundant microcontroller circuit and dual output channels (each with redundant contact sets from separate forced-guided relays). The DIN-rail-mountable enclosure has removable wiring terminal blocks that snap out for easy module installation and replacement.  Each switching output is rated for up to 25V ac at up to 6 amps.

PresencePlus P4

Banner Engineering Corp. has announced new PresencePLUS® P4 GEO vision sensors.  The P4 GEO easily inspects for correct features regardless of product orientation or position in the sensor's field of view - eliminating expensive and complex mechanical fixturing.  Priced at just $995.00, the P4 GEO is a powerful performer that delivers full 360° inspection at a fraction of the cost of competitive products.

"The P4 GEO delivers robust inspections in an easy-to-apply, low cost package," said Dan Holste, Banner's Director of Vision Products.  "Intelligent area inspecting at this level of performance has never been available to the market at anything close to this price," Holste also said.

Banner's PresencePLUS Pro vision sensor defined low cost vision sensing and the PresencePLUS P4 GEO continues this progression - making it even easier and affordable for the traditional sensing marketplace to adopt and deploy vision sensing capabilities at multiple points in their application.  Holste added that a key factor to Banner's vision products success is that the complete PresencePLUS vision sensor family features a common user interface that is considered by many to be the easiest-to-use on the market today.  Its intuitive interface allows anyone with even basic PC abilities to easily set up an inspection.

The P4 GEO offers several features that make it particularly easy to deploy on the factory floor.  A remote TEACH feature allows the sensor to learn new features it will need to inspect for - without connecting to a PC or shutting down the line.  New inspections are learned real time while production is running.  The built-in live video image output allows users to view the sensor's inspection in real time and to also view failed inspection images without the use of a PC.  The P4 GEO vision sensor can interface to machines and factory networks via its built-in 10/100 Ethernet connection, RS-232 or discrete input/outputs.

The high-throughput feature detection abilities of the PresencePLUS P4 GEO make it ideal for a broad range of applications in the packaging, pharmaceutical, assembly, baking, automotive,  metalforming and semiconductor industries.  Applications for the P4 GEO include part identification and orientation to eliminate errors by rejecting incorrect parts before they are assembled or packaged;  assembly verification to inspect for all critical features and to error proof the manufacturing process;  and correct label verification at high speed production rates.

The PresencePLUS P4 GEO performs like a vision sensor yet facilitates changeover as easily as a standard photoelectric sensor.  Now users can apply vision sensing in machines and on manufacturing lines where it was previously impractical.  Without the need for fixturing, overall costs are reduced and inspection throughputs are increased.  The P4 GEO can inspect up to 6,000 parts-per-minute with typical inspections averaging 1,500 parts-per-minute.

Compact, self-contained P4 GEOs are available in both in-line and right-angle versions, defined by the location of the lens on the end or side of the sensor housing.  Both versions measure only 66.8 mm (2.63") wide and the in-line model measures 136.1 mm (5.36") long while the right angle model is just 124.5 mm (4.90") long.  Included mounting brackets facilitate easy location of the P4 GEO sensors on machines or conveyors.  The units feature 3 bi-color LED indicators to clearly show unit status during setup and operation.  Banner also offers hundreds of specialized lighting and lensing options to solve even the most challenging applications.

SELF-CHECKING TOUCH BUTTONS

touchbuttons.gif (21323 bytes)Banner Engineering has introduced its new Self-Checking Optical Touch Buttons (STBs).  The unique, patent-pending design includes an additional emitter and receiver for redundant self-checking.  The ergonomic touch button uses a diverse redundant microcontroller platform, works with a secondary internal photoelectric circuit and has diverse redundant outputs.  The new STB buttons have the same form, fit and function as Banner's popular Optical Touch Buttons, with the dual-microcontroller technology added.

Because they switch when their light beam is broken by a simple insertion of a finger, no physical pressure is required to operate the buttons.

One of the unique features of the STB design is the ability to detect an internal safety-critical circuit fault and immediately switch the outputs to the Off state.  This is the first ergonomic activation device to provide this type of, FMEA verified, self-checking feature.  No other manufacturer of ergonomic touch buttons can make this claim.

The STB has two green LED's to give an operator or electrician feedback about power, output state or fault conditions.  The indicators are located on the front of the device and marked Output/Fault and power.

When the STB is powered up, the green Power LED indicator turns on.   When the button is activated the outputs change to the On state and the green Output./Fault LED indictor turns on.  When the STB microcontrollers detect that there is an internal fault, the outputs are held in the Off state and the green Output/Fault LED flashes.  STB buttons are immune to ambient light, EMI and RFI interference.

WORLD-BEAM

Banner Engineering is proud to introduce the WORLD-BEAM™, a new universally-mountable photoelectric sensor that  measures only 35 mm (1.38") high, x 15 mm (0.59) wide, x 31 mm (1.22" deep.  Because its single housing style fits almost all mounting requirements, the WORLD-BEAM™ can replace hundreds of existing sensors, meet or exceed their performance, and take up less space.

Especially significant is the performance of the WORLD-BEAM™ sensor, despite its small size.  It is available in all sensing modes, and features performance that exceeds that of sensors several times its size:  opposed mode sensing range is a powerful 20 m (67');  retroreflective mode range is 6 m (19.8');  and convergent models have a 16 mm (0.63" or 43 mm (1.7") focus.  Sensing modes also include regular and wide-angle diffuse (proximity mode) with ranges up to 450 mm (18").   Amazingly, this sensor can replace larger barrel sensors, low-end economy sensors and larger mini-style sensors, with the same or better range.

The WORLD-BEAM™ sensor also features versatile output configurations and self-diagnostics.  Users can choose complementary NPN (sinking) or PNP (sourcing) outputs, one normally open and one normally closed, each capable of switching up to a 100 mA load.

LEDs indicated "POWER ON" and "OUTPUT STATUS," as well as output overload condition and marginal signal.  The WORLD-BEAM™ sensor delivers increased sensing in low and high volume applications.   The new WORLD-BEAM™ has a rugged ABS sealed housing that stands up to tough applications.  The housing is leakproof, and meets the IP67 and NEMA 6 standards for harsh environments.  Integral protective circuitry guards the sensors against reverse polarity and transient voltages, short circuits and false pulse on power-up.

The unit features a sealed sensitivity adjustment that can be easily changed with a finger or screwdriver for accurate, dependable sensing.  A molded mechanical stop prevents over-adjustment damage.  The internal pot is totally isolated from the environment and sealed.  LEDs protruding above the top of the sensor provide 360° visibility, keeping users informed of the WORLD-BEAM™'s operating status from any angle.

Users can choose models with an integral, 2 or 9 meter (6.5' or 30') prewired cable or 150 mm (6") "pigtail" pico-style, quick disconnect cable.  All cabling options feature a unique strain relief design, allowing for extreme flexibility in mounting configurations.
