Incremental Encoders

Dynapar incremental encoders provide speed, direction and relative position feedback by generating a stream of binary pulses proportional to the rotation of a motor or driven shaft. An incremental encoder provides excellent speed and distance feedback and, since there are few sensors involved, the systems are both simple and inexpensive. Dynapar offers both optical and magnetic incremental encoders in four mounting options: shafted with coupling, hollow-shaft, hub-shaft or bearingless. Single channel incremental encoders can measure speed which dual channel or quadrature encoders (AB) can interpret direction based on the phase relationship between the two channels. Indexed quadrature encoders (ABZ) are also available for homing location.

An incremental encoder is designed to be versatile and customizable to fit a wide variety of applications. The three broad categories of applications based on environment are:

  • Heavy Duty: demanding environment with a high probability of contaminants and moisture, higher temperature, shock and vibration requirements as seen in pulp, paper, steel and wood mills.
  • Industrial Duty: general factory operating  environment which requires standard IP ratings, moderate shock, vibration and temperature specs as seen in food and beverage, textile and general factory automation plants.
  • Light Duty/Servo: controlled environment with high accuracy and temperature requirements such as robotics, electronics and semiconductors.

Hazardous Rated Encoders

Dynapar has several U.S./Canadian, ATEX, CSA and IECEx rated encoders for applications requiring explosion proof encoders.

Dynapar’s rugged Hazardous Series HSD35 encoders provide customers with a broader choice in optical encoder selection for their requirements. Certified by UL for Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C & D; Class II, Division 2, Groups F & G operation, the Hazardous Series HSD35 incremental encoder was designed with certain key elements to provide more robust feedback in hazardous environments and is available in a variety of mechanical configurations to custom fit customer applications. EPIC latching industrial connectors, stainless steel shaft/clamp and Viton seals make this an ideal encoder for mill applications.

Hazardous Series HSD35 encoders feature:

  • Hard anodized aluminum housing with optional dual isolated output for critical application redundancy
  • More robust connector protection through terminal box with compact design and field serviceable connectors for convenient solder-less connections
  • ABEC 3 bearings and rugged design for high 400 G shock and 20 G vibration environments in tough customer applications
  • Stainless steel clamp and hub shaft for mill duty
  • Accommodation of shaft sizes up to 1.25” (electrically isolated up to 1.125”)

Shafted Incremental Encoders

Dynapar offers shafted rotary encoders and encoders with integrated couplings, with shaft sizes ranging from 0.125 to 0.625 inches.

Hollow Shaft Encoders

Dynapar’s wide range of hollow-shaft rotary encoders have bore sizes of 0.25 to 2.875 inches and resolution up to 5000 PPR.

Hub-Shaft Encoders

Hub-shaft encoders provide simplified installation and several tether options in bore sizes from 0.25 to 0.75 inches.

Bearingless Incremental Encoders

Bearingless rotary encoders offer reliable feedback via a wheel and sensor design for maximum life in tough applications.

Kit/Modular Encoders

Kit encoders and modular encoders deliver compact size for easy installation and several resolution options with minimal or no housing.
